The cast of Los Altos Youth Theatre’s “Gretel & Hansel” includes, from left, Rachel Bratt (as Moxie), Kat Meter (Eek-Mouse), Annika Nori (Princess), Lauren Waite (Shadow) and Lora Maslenitsyna (Magic). The play closes July 28.

Los Altos Youth Theatre is scheduled to present “Gretel & Hansel” through July 28 at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave. The production opened last week.

Written in the style of a British pantomime by Kate Hawley for Shakespeare Santa Cruz, this version of the classic “Hansel and Gretel” fairy tale is full of puns and audience participation. The music, composed by Craig Bohmler, features a number of styles – from ragtime to hip-hop.

The play is performed by two rotating casts, which include Paige Decena as Gretel, Timmy Smith and Alex Sanchez as Hansel, Shaina Hammer and Dor Gvirtsman as the witch, Emily Goto as the stepmother, Sarah Hammer as Tom Cat and Renee Remsberg as Kitten Caboodle. The production team includes ej Taylor (director), Gay Richard (choreography), Michelle Markwart-Deveaux (vocal direction) and Madeleine Graham (music direction).

“This show was an enormous hit with audience and cast when we did it nine years ago, and we look forward to sharing it with a new generation,” said Trish Files, LAYT’s artistic director.

Performances are slated 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, 7:30 p.m. July 26 and 27, and 2 p.m. July 27 and 28. Tickets are $15-$17.
