Pear Avenue Theatre’s “Pear Slices 2011” features eight short plays. It runs through April 24.

Pear Avenue Theatre’s annual festival of short plays by the Pear Playwrights Guild is scheduled through April 24 in Mountain View. This year’s performance is titled “Pear Slices 2011.”

To tie in with Pear’s “Americana” season, playwrights were asked to embrace an American experience theme. The entries varied from historical to present-day settings and “faction” to fiction. Eight finalists were selected from more than 20 entries.

V.B. Leghorn’s “19” is set in August 1920 in the home of Tennessee State Congressman Harry T. Burn, whose discussion with his wife about the vote for women proves amusing and surprising.

Ross Peter Nelson’s “Imperfect Union” takes a look at the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings.

“The Last Arawak,” also by Nelson, comically skewers Christopher Columbus and raises criticisms of colonialism.

Margy Kahn’s “Letters from Leipzig” recalls an era when young women’s choices were limited, but dreams could still come true.

Leah Halper’s “Through Delhi” explores a woman’s negotiation with her mother’s avatar in an effort to understand the past – and her will.

Earl T. Roske’s “Lost Girls” looks at the once-common practice of hidden teen pregnancies and closed adoptions through the eyes of two vastly different women.

Elyce Melmon’s “Motherhood” introduces a vision of Whistler and his mother never found in history books.

Beverly Altschuler’s “Showdown” is about a whimsical wanderer in an even wilder Wild West.

The theater is located at 1220 Pear Ave.

Performances are scheduled 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $15-$25.
