Locals ‘Escape Alcatraz’

Five local residents completed the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon March 3. The annual event features a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an 8-mile run through San Francisco. Los Altos residents competing included David Hinz (3 hours, 29 minutes and 34 seconds; 105th in men’s 45-49 division), Karl Townsend (3:57.01; 162th in men’s 45-49 division), John Cummins (3:22.46; 48th in men’s 50-54 division) and Jacob Tanz (4:05.27; 15th in men’s 60-64 division). James Budge of Los Altos Hills competed on a corporate team that placed 25th (3:19.05).

REI ‘Bike Fit’ event

REI in Mountain View is slated to host a free presentation, “When a Bike Fit is Correct” 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday. Curtis Cramblett, an expert-level cycling coach, physical therapist, and founder of Revolutions in Fitness, will discuss how to improve performance and prevent injuries on the bike, while physical therapist Katie Kennedy will share her expertise on proper bike fit. Spring hoops camp

Spartan Sports Camp’s Spring Break Basketball Camp is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon April 8-12 at Mountain View High. It is open to boys and girls in grades 4-8. Led by Mountain View coaches and alumni, the camp will focus on shooting, ball handling and defense. Cost is $195. Baseball tryouts

The Mavericks, Los Altos-Mountain View PONY Baseball’s under-8 club team, have scheduled tryouts 12:30 p.m. March 24 at Cooper Park in Mountain View. The season runs March through May. Players must preregister to try out. For more information, visit www.lamvpb.org.
