Forum addresses downtown parking

The city of Los Altos has scheduled a community forum on the city’s ongoing downtown parking management plan 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hillview Community Center, Room 17, 97 Hillview Ave.

City staff will report the results of occupancy counts conducted downtown in September and December. A consultant engaged by the city for the parking management study will present proposed strategies. Input from residents on the recommended parking management options is an important component of the project.

Flu still widespread

Flu continues to spread in California, even as infections die down on the East Coast.

The Santa Clara County Department of Public Health confirmed last week that two homeless men died from influenza in January, the first flu-related Bay Area deaths in residents 64 and younger. Across California, 14 people in that age group have died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t track flu deaths in Americans over age 64 but estimates that the elderly account for approximately 90 percent of flu-related deaths.

The elderly, the very young and those with some chronic diseases are at high risk of flu-related complications such as pneumonia and can take anti-viral drugs at the onset of flu to lessen the illness’ severity.

Flu shots are still available and recommended for everyone over 6 months of age. A locator map at flu.gov lists local pharmacies with the vaccine. The shots reduce symptom severity as well as the likelihood of infection.

More bike lanes + more bike racks = less need for car parking lots
