Local firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at a Ravensbury Avenue home that started at approximately 9 a.m. today (Jan. 30).
According to Santa Clara County Fire Chief Jim Young, the fire started in the garage of the Los Altos home and quickly spread to the kitchen and attic.
Fire investigators were on scene but have not determined the cause of the fire, according to Young. No one was in the home at the time of the blaze.
Young said 40 to 50 percent of the home suffered "significant" damage as a result of the blaze, which caused a 5-gallon propane tank outside the garage to explode.
Young added that four dogs on the property during the fire fled into the backyard and escaped injury.
"They're all OK," he said.
Homeowner Dr. James Kelly, a Los Altos dentist, arrived on scene and told the Town Crier he was informed of the blaze when a neighbor phoned him at work at approximately 9:15 a.m. Kelly said he has lived in the home with his wife and three children for nine years. Despite the damage to his property, Kelly said he was relieved his family and pets were safe.
"That's more important than anything," Kelly said. "Property can be replaced, but not human lives."
Young noted that four fire engines and two battalion chiefs, as well as single rescue and hazmat vehicles, responded to the first alarm. Responders sounded a second alarm 10 minutes later, he added, sending three additional fire engines, as well as another rescue unit and battalion chief, to fight the fire. Altogether, Young said, approximately 40 fire personnel responded.
