Construction crews begin preparations for streetscape work along San Antonio Road in downtown Los Altos. The work is expected to take approximately three months. City of Los Altos crews began construction this week on the San Antonio Road streetscape project, targeted for completion in early April. The initial work will impact the section of San Antonio between West Edith Avenue and First Street. City officials said the streetscape project calls for installation of pedestrian-safe sidewalks and crosswalks along San Antonio and improved aesthetics along the key route in the downtown area.
The project includes widening the existing sidewalk along the downtown side of San Antonio that runs between Main and Third streets to meet accessibility standards. Cosmetic upgrades include construction of a 4-foot-high wall covered with plants to screen views of cars parked along San Antonio and relandscaping the medians along San Antonio in Parking Plaza 3 between West Edith and First. Rain gardens, which include materials that promote absorption, will be planted in the parking plaza to capture stormwater runoff. Approximately 50 parking stalls in the South Parking Plaza, adjacent to San Antonio between Main and Third, will be unavailable during the sidewalk expansion work. San Antonio Road may at times be reduced to one lane in either direction while the median landscape improvements are under way.
