Pete D’Epiro of Evolution Trainers participates in a pushup-athon to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. He completed 1,300 pushups at the Dec. 10 event in Mountain View.

Staff and clients at Evolution Trainers in Mountain View Dec. 10 hosted a “Day of IMPACT,” a pushup-athon to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. They raised more than $30,000.

Organizers were inspired by the newly founded Durkin IMPACT Foundation, which encourages fitness professionals to hold fundraisers to help with super storm/hurricane relief.

The rules of the event were to complete as many pushups – or any other single movement of choice – from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Sponsors could make a per-repetition or flat-rate donation.

Participants combined to complete more than 10,000 repetitions. All the proceeds will be sent through the Durkin IMPACT Foundation to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The top fundraiser, Evolution Trainers owner Ashley Selman, brought in $8,014. Trainer Steve Saxe was second with $5,004.70.

Jeff Schirle did the most push-ups (1,500), followed by fellow trainer Pete D’Epiro (1,300).

Many of the donations came from Evolution clients who live in and around Los Altos, according to Selman.

“This is an incredible story of the Los Altos community coming together to help others in need all the way across the country,” she said.
