Residents can get a running (or walking) start to 2013 by participating in the Los Altos Recreation Department’s annual New Year’s Day 5K Fun Run.

The free, noncompetitive event is scheduled to begin 9 a.m. Jan. 1 at Community Plaza, corner of State and Main streets in Los Altos.

Preregistration is not required. All ages and ability levels are welcome to participate. The course is on street surfaces, with State, Whitney and Main streets closed to vehicle traffic. Bicycles will not be permitted. Light refreshments will be served.
