Helped by Thursday’s five-game win at rival Mountain View, the Los Altos High girls volleyball team has secured the sixth seed in the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. The Eagles (21-14 overall) are scheduled to open against No. 11 Sobrato 7 p.m. today.
“We are very happy with our sixth seed and really looking forward to having one last home game this upcoming Wednesday,” said outside hitter Meghan McDermott. “We play in a very competitive league and CCS division, so we are excited to hopefully do well in the playoffs.”
If Los Altos defeats Sobrato (15-14), it will meet No. 3 Los Gatos in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Eagles split their two league matches against the Wildcats (21-6), who finished just ahead of them in the SCVAL De Anza Division standings. Los Altos placed fourth (8-6) after beating Mountain View Thursday.
Eagles coach Peter Kim called the win, “One of the best matches I’ve been a part of in my coaching career.” Playing without star setter Hanna Koehler – who is expected back for CCS – Los Altos rallied to victory after losing two of the first three sets.
“What really made a difference was that we fought until those last two points,” said McDermott, whose 17 kills was second only to teammate Carmen Annevelink (season-high 21). “The game was going back and forth and we never gave up fighting hard until the match ended.”
Joyce Christiansen-Salameh, starting in place of Koehler, “played great,” Kim said.
Mountain View, which finished fifth in league (6-8), is the No. 7 seed in CCS Division II. The Spartans (17-16 overall) are slated to host No. 10 Leland (15-15) 7 p.m. today.
At the same time, fifth-seeded St. Francis (19-13) visits No. 12 Woodside (23-9). The Lancers made a quick exit from the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs, falling to Valley Christian in last week’s quarterfinals despite 17 kills from Chloe Lott.

After losing both games to Mountain View in the round-robin portion of league play, Los Altos beat its rival 11-9 Saturday in the SCVAL De Anza Division championship game.
The Eagles received five goals from Sam Lisbonne, four from Ian McColl and one each from Paul Bergevin and Drew Lytle. Goalie Cameron Putnam recorded 11 saves.
The Spartans, undefeated in league prior to the tournament, trailed Los Altos 4-1 after the opening quarter and never caught up. Connor Rudolph scored three goals to lead Mountain View; Rey Castillo and Randy Kenyon contributed two each.
The teams won’t face one another again this year: Los Altos (16-11 overall) is the third seed in CCS Division I; Mountain View (19-4) is the No. 5 seed in Division II. The Eagles have a first-round bye and will meet either No. 6 Carmel (21-6) or No. 11 Stevenson (15-9) in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Mountain View was scheduled to host No. 12 Pioneer (15-11) Tuesday, after the Town Crier’s press deadline. The winner advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
St. Francis (12-15) is the No. 2 seed in Division II and doesn’t play until Saturday’s quarterfinals.

St. Francis (22-4) has landed the top seed in the CCS Division I playoffs and faces No. 9 Homestead (12-8) or No. 8 Pioneer (16-11) Saturday in the quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
