MVLA sponsors parent education event The Los Altos-Mountain View School Speaker Series has scheduled Christine VanDeVelde to discuss “College Admission: From Application to Acceptance” 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave. VanDeVelde co-authored the book “College Admission: From Application to Acceptance, Step by Step” (Three Rivers Press, 2011), a comprehensive guide to the college application process. VanDeVelde, a journalist and parent, has been through the college admission process firsthand and wrote the book she wished were available when her daughter applied to colleges.
Her presentation will include what colleges want and why, when and how to start the college search, finding schools that are right for your student and how to make the best decision. The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation and the Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council co-sponsor the event. Santa Rita hosts Witches’ Delight Santa Rita School’s Witches’ Delight returns to Los Altos for its 52nd haunting 3-8 p.m. Friday at the school, 700 Los Altos Ave. The event will include carnival rides, games for all ages, a cakewalk, cookie decorating and a costume contest. Churros, cotton candy and popcorn will be available for purchase. The Santa Rita BBQers will prepare dinner. Admission is free, tickets for activities are $1. Proceeds benefit the Santa Rita PTA. Living Classroom seeks volunteers The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature. The program reaches all grade levels within the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies. A docent and often an assistant docent along with one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside or outside the classroom. Training and materials are provided.
