Alpha Course launches in February

Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos has scheduled an Alpha Course that begins with an introductory session 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of the church’s pastor, the Rev. David Moore, 860 University Ave.

The course, designed to encourage participants to explore Christianity in a safe environment, includes a light dinner and discussion in a relaxed and open setting.

Participants may or may not continue to attend after the introductory session. The course will continue on Sunday evenings for nine weeks with a series of professional presentations on DVD, followed by nonjudgmental roundtable discussions.

Participants are invited to ask questions about why Christians believe what the Bible says, the creation of the world and evolution, whether God really exists and whether there is life after death.

People from many different backgrounds, religions and points of view attend Alpha. Some have gone to church all their life but feel they never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.

Admission is free and open to the public.

For more information on the Alpha Course, visit alphausa.org.

LAUMC ‘Sale-Abration’ supports African women

The Los Altos United Methodist Women have scheduled “Sale-Abration 2014” 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. Sunday in the church’s Creekside Center, 655 Magdalena Ave.

“Sale-Abration” will feature gift items, floral arrangements and baked goods as well as snacks and other edibles for Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day.

The annual fundraiser supports the African Student Education Fund, which provides scholarships to African women pursuing higher education, primarily at Africa University in Zimbabwe. The fund, established in 2005 by the Los Altos United Methodist Women, has supported 38 women to date who intend to use their education to improve life for all in Africa. The group hopes to support 10 students in the coming academic year.
