Los Altos boys & girls basketball teams off to successful starts in league

With a fourth-quarter flurry, the Los Altos High boys basketball team turned a close game into a rout last week at Milpitas.

The Eagles, ahead by only two at the end of the third quarter, outscored the Trojans 25-7 the rest of the way to win their SCVAL De Anza Division opener 85-65.

Los Altos coach Bob McFarlane said the Jan. 8 game changed when his team “decided to increase the intensity of our defense and the execution of our offense.”

Joe Malgesini scored 13 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth period. The senior buried a trio of 3-pointers in the contest. Danny Rosenbaum added 21 points, while Steven Garverick contributed 17 and “probably had the best overall game, playing excellent post defense and taking efficient shots,” McFarlane said.

Pinewood is off to a 2-0 start in the West Bay Athletic League. The Panthers topped host Harker 49-45 Jan. 7 and defeated Woodside Priory 52-44 Friday in another road game.

Greg Naumann put up 17 points for the Panthers (10-2 overall) against Harker.

After a 10-0 start to the season, St. Francis has dropped two consecutive games to open West Catholic Athletic League play. The Lancers followed a 69-42 loss at Mitty Jan. 7 with a 63-47 setback to visiting Serra Friday. Matthew Tripaldi scored 12 points in Friday’s contest.

Girls basketball

Los Altos extended its winning streak to eight games by edging Santa Clara 47-46 Jan. 7 in the SCVAL El Camino Division opener for both teams.

The visiting Eagles outscored the Bruins 25-16 in the second half.

Allegra Maeso scored 12 points for Los Altos (9-3 overall) and Rebecca Andrews added nine.

A 17-8 fourth-quarter spurt pushed Pinewood to a 59-51 win over International Jan. 8 in non-league play. Leeana Bade and Marissa Hing scored 15 points each to pace the Panthers (12-1).

St. Francis began its WCAL slate with a 59-57 home loss to Mitty Jan. 8. The Lancers were outscored 15-8 in the fourth quarter. Marisa Mondave and Kiana Tom totaled 12 points each for St. Francis.

The Lancers rebounded Friday by beating host Notre Dame-Belmont 55-26. Tom scored 18 points and Mondave 16 for St. Francis (8-5 overall), which jumped to a 30-11 lead by halftime.

Boys soccer

Mountain View’s 3-0 win at Fremont Friday to open De Anza Division play marked coach Jim McGuirk’s 250th victory. McGuirk has coached the Spartans for 25 years and graduated from the school when it was known as Awalt.

St. Francis played Serra to a 1-1 draw Saturday in WCAL action. Luke Newquist scored for the Lancers (3-1-1 league, 4-1-3 overall).

Girls soccer

In its SCVAL De Anza Division opener, Los Altos played Palo Alto to a 2-all tie Jan. 8.

Trailing 2-0 at intermission, the Eagles evened the score on goals by Katie Winters (penalty kick) and Rebecca Andrews (assist Julia Goupil).

Visiting Los Altos went to 2-2-2 overall.

After opening WBAL Foothill Division play with a pair of losses, Pinewood capped last week with a 4-1 home win over Notre Dame-San Jose. Etelle Stephan and Olivia Biggs scored two goals each.

Pinewood coach Michael Tetzlaf said the Panthers (2-9 overall) “can feel good about the way we played (Saturday).”

Wrestling

St. Francis topped Sacred Heart Cathedral 38-33 in WCAL action Jan. 8.

Robert Kresge (182 pounds), John Casarez (195) and Takoa Ahoia (285) earned pins for the visiting Lancers.
