MVHS grad's documentary screening supports local nonprofit

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Mountain View High School graduate Jose Antonio Vargas revealed his status as an undocumented immigrant in the New York Times Magazine in 2011.

Vargas recently produced a film, “Documented,” chronicling his journey from the Philippines to the U.S. as a child, his public struggle as an immigration reform activist/provocateur and his journey inward as he reconnected with his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in 20 years. The documentary aims to underscore a broken immigration system that leads to broken families and broken lives.

Vargas began filming in April 2011, two months before publicly disclosing his undocumented status. Since coming out, he’s participated in more than 150 events in nearly 40 states. “Documented” includes footage of the time he crashed a Mitt Romney rally in Iowa before the caucuses.

A journalist for more a decade, Vargas has written for Rolling Stone, the Huffington Post and the Washington Post, where he was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech. He has covered a wide range of issues, from technology’s and social media’s impact on politics to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the nation’s capital and the 2008 presidential campaign.

Vargas is partnering with MVLA Community Scholars to host a screening of “Documented” 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. MVLA Community Scholars, which supports local students via scholarships and mentors, helped Vargas fund his education.

Tickets are $27. A VIP package includes a pre-event reception with Vargas.

For tickets and more information, visit mvlacommunityscholars.org or purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?organ_val=23838&event_val=LADO.
