County meeting explores future of expressways

Los Altos residents with opinions on the county’s expressway system will have a forum this week to express their thoughts.

Santa Clara County officials have scheduled an open house for residents Thursday on its 2040 County Expressway Plan – a long-range plan for county expressways and the Santa Teresa-Hale Corridor. The plan serves as an update to the county’s original 2003 Expressway Plan and the initial update for the 2008 plan. The meeting is scheduled 6-8 p.m. at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

According to Los Altos Transportation Projects Manager Cedric Novenario, the 2040 plan, estimated to require 18 months to complete, will address maintenance and potential improvements to the county expressway system – including Foothill Expressway. Related county projects, including plans to widen Loyola Bridge, will also be re-examined, he said.

Novenario specifically noted that residents attending the event would have an opportunity to provide input on their personal use of Foothill and other county expressways and to weigh in on the existing conditions.

According to Novenario, county officials plan to examine other aspects of the expressway system, such as traffic conditions where streets intersect expressways. Emphasis will be placed on conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and various other modes of transportation.

“The plan itself is a 10,000-foot-level look at the expressway system,” Novenario told the Town Crier. “The county will build a priority list for each expressway and when funding comes up, they’ll use that list to make improvements.”

Novenario said several staff members from Los Altos in addition to those from the county will attend the open house to gather input from residents on their likes, dislikes and desires for county expressways. Novenario added that he anticipates a high level of interest locally. Residents will be able to review maps and other materials related to county expressway conditions and projects at the meeting.

“As the economy gets back on its feet and more people are working, the expressways are vital to us,” he said. “It’s important for residents to come out and let the county know what works and doesn’t work for them from a user standpoint.”
