ELFRIEDE “ELFIE” WIESENDANGER

OBIT ElfriedeWiesendanger1
OBIT ElfriedeWiesendanger2

1/11/1927 – 11/19/2013
Resident of Los Altos

On November 19, 2013 we lost a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and overall terrific human being after battling dementia for the last several years.

Elfie was born and raised in Switzerland and married her husband Hans in May, 1954. In 1955, Hans took a research position at UCLA and they immigrated to California. Elfie was pregnant with their first child Thomas, who coincidentally was the first baby born in the new UCLA hospital. While Hans’s assignment at UCLA was for two years, they fell in love with California and never went back home. In 1957 they moved to Mountain View and then to Los Altos in 1967.

Elfie was a stay at home mom raising 4 children, often singlehandedly as Hans often travelled internationally for work. While a credentialed kindergarten teacher in Switzerland, she went back to school and received her Library degree from Foothill College. As the kids grew up, in 1974 Elfie hired into the Germanic Studies area of the Green Library at Stanford University. She loved to sing and was a member of the Stanford Symphonic Choir for over 10 years. Elfie retired from Stanford after 20 years and in 2004, Elfie and Hans move to Vi in Palo Alto to enjoy their senior years.

In addition to singing, Elfie loved classical music, fine art, entertaining, knitting and raising flowers. She took art appreciation classes well into her 60’s. Elfie was a very strong woman swimming every day or walking to keep fit. She doted on her grandkids taking them to the park, the ballet, movies and playing games with them. Elfie and Hans were members of the Peninsula Swiss Club for over 30 years.

Elfie was preceded in death by her youngest son Felix Paul, who passed away in 1991, after a lengthy illness. During that period she was a tremendous, devoted care giver to Felix ensuring his final days were as comfortable as possible.

Elfie is survived by her husband Hans of 59 years, her son Thomas and his wife Dodi from Zurich Switzerland, her Daughter Brigitte and her husband Eric Imhof of Pinole, CA and son Mark and his wife Judy, of Danville, CA and her beloved grandchildren Sarah and Jonas Wiesendanger living in Zurich, Switzerland; Eric Pierson Imhof in Pinole, and Christina and Kathryn Wiesendanger in Danville.

While we mourn her loss here on earth, we are thankful that she did not suffer and that now after 22 long years, she is reunited with her son Felix Paul.

A celebration of life will be held at 2p.m. on January 11, at the Vi located at 620 Sand Hill Road in Palo Alto, CA. The family is especially grateful to the wonderful staff and caregivers at the Vi, who were always very warm and compassionate, and always had a smile on their face.
