Concerts benefit LightHouse for the Blind

Town Crier File Photo
Steve Gill and daughter Anne are set to co-host two concerts benefiting LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Longtime Los Altos residents Steve Gill and his daughter, Anne, are scheduled to co-host “‘The Song Is You’: Kern (Jerome) and Cahn (Sammy) Go to Hollywood,” the 13th annual Benefit Concerts for LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 7:30 p.m. Jan 18 and 19 at Menlo School’s Spieker Ballroom, 50 Valparaiso Ave., Atherton.

In 1997, shortly after Anne graduated from Los Altos High School, she was in a near-fatal car accident that left her blind and brain injured.

In the spring of 1998, after a long rehabilitation period, she returned home.

Steve and his wife, Nancy, said they were frustrated to discover that while many programs serve those with traumatic brain injuries and other services help the blind and visually impaired, few resources are designed to help people who, like their daughter, suffer from multiple disabilities.

The Gills discovered that LightHouse offers a session at its Enchanted Hills Camp for visually impaired adults with other disabilities.

Their gratitude for the camp’s existence, their appreciation for the patience and compassion of the staff – many of whom are visually impaired themselves – and their desire to support the special-needs session inspired Steve, a veteran Bay Area actor/singer and founder of Menlo School’s Fine Arts Program, to organize the first benefit concert for LightHouse in 1999.

Previous concerts have raised more than $79,000 in donations, enabling dozens of adults with multiple impairments to receive full or partial scholarships to attend Enchanted Hills Camp.

Like Anne, they spend five days in the Napa hills participating in activities such as horseback riding, swimming and hiking.

Los Altos resident Mollie Thompson and former Los Altos resident Linda Jordan will join Anne and Steve at this year’s tribute to composers Kern and Kahn. The concert will also feature seven alumni of Menlo School and three Menlo faculty members.

A $15 donation is requested. Seating is first-come, first served.

For more information, call Steve or Nancy Gill at 948-4648.
