City should pay, not Passerelle

Passerelle Investment Co. Community Development Director Brooke Ray Smith’s offer to fund a traffic study downtown is certainly a generous one (“Passerelle plans to study Foothill Expressway intersections,” Dec. 25).

But it is an offer for a study that should be sponsored and followed up by Los Altos city government staff, not a private development company. I think this situation begins an unwelcome precedent.

Topics of sorrow and interest

I read with great sorrow about the passing of Jack Stroud (Obituaries, Dec. 25). Jack was simply one of the finest persons I’ve ever known. I extend my sympathies and condolences to his family.

I read with interest Grace Acosta’s column (“Why is Pope Francis Time’s 2013 Person of the Year?,” Dec. 25).

I agree with Acosta that the pope is doing exactly what he ought to be doing. That being the case, why should he be selected as Person of the Year? It reminds me of Thomas Paine’s observations about the “summer soldier and the sunshine patriot.” In a crisis, they will shrink from the service of their country.

I find Christmas to be one of the most joyous times of the year. In part that is because I believe in the soundness and goodness of Jesus’ commands to his followers to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick and house the homeless. I hope that among Jesus’ followers there are very few summer soldiers and sunshine patriots.
