Tahoe Tidbits: Skiing, eating and music beckon visitors

North Shore

Imagine schussing down the steepest slopes at Northstar this winter with the sunlight twinkling on the snow. With the Hit the Slopes Package offered by the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, it could happen.

The package includes a deluxe or mountain guestroom, two three-day adult or child’s ski lift tickets at Northstar – with ski valet – for $529 per night. The special runs through April 20 and requires a four-night consecutive stay.

The hotel brings more to the winter party with its new Backyard Bar and BBQ, located on the back patio, when skiers hop off the gondola.

Daily 4-6 p.m. après-ski specials include veggie, cheese or barbecue wood-fired oven-baked pizzas; six-beer buckets for $20; and half-priced flatbreads. Enjoy hearty half- or full-rack smoked ribs, beef-brisket sandwiches or a smattering of sides like smoked pork beans, and a selection of desserts. Items range from $15 to $25.

Guests can order local craft beers or “saloon-inspired” cocktails, according to hotel spokeswoman Robin Penning.

The 170-room AAA Five-Diamond hotel features the Highlands Spa, which includes a fitness center and treatments centered on water and woods.

Café Blue offers organic Blue Bottle Coffee, and the Manzanita Restaurant serves California cuisine with organic, locally grown meats. For $75 per person, parties of eight can sit at the chef’s table next to the exposition kitchen for a culinary education from the chef de cuisine.

Another popular event occurs nightly outside at the fire pit, where a “marshmologist” teaches The Art of the S’more.

South Shore

There’s more to Tahoe than skiing.

Starship starring Mickey Thomas, the band derived from Jefferson Airplane, rocks into the South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The band promises to play its biggest hits, including “We Built This City,” “Nothing’s Going to Stop Us” and “Sara.” Thomas also provided lead vocals on the Elvin Bishop Band’s 1976 smash “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”

Jefferson Starship singer/guitarist Paul Kantner, also a founding member of the Airplane, left the band in 1984, suing for rights to the group’s name. He objected to the more commercial direction the group was headed. After the suit was settled in 1985, the band’s name eventually became Starship featuring Mickey Thomas.
