Joan was born in San Francisco at the Letterman General Hospital in April 22, 1928, and died in Los Altos, California on December 17, 2013. She was 85 years old.
She traveled a lot since her father was a career officer in the Army and her husband spent 30 years as a naval pilot. She made friends everywhere and enjoyed tennis and swimming for puka shells in Hawaii. She joined the International tennis club in Bangkok and still communicates with acquaintances she met there. She never lacked for friends and was gregarious in nature.
She attended Oakland High School and went on to Mills College where she graduated in 1950. She became a teacher in Franklin Elementary School in Alameda, until she married at the Catholic Church in Berkeley in 1959.
Joan volunteered at the Bargain Box, a subsidiary of the Children’s Health Council, for 25 years. She went twice a week and enjoyed the people working there, as well as the customers.
She had a short illness for three months, and functioned normally until the end.
She was preceded in death by her parents Grayson and Ramona Schmidt, and her older sister Ramona Schwartz.
Instead of flowers, donate to the Hospice care at Pathways at 585 North Mary Avenue in Sunnyvale CA 94085. They did a fantastic job.
