UPC assembles items for Samaritan’s Purse

Jeannie and Jim Waltz of Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos spearhead a project that involves filling shoeboxes with necessities for children in underprivileged countries for distribution via the nonprofit Samaritan’s Purse.

Last year, they filled 60 shoeboxes, searching for items at post-Christmas sales and bargain hunting throughout the year at the Dollar Store, Target, Walmart and Michaels. The Waltzes and other volunteers have accumulated enough items to fill 102 shoeboxes this year.

The Waltzes have recruited fellow church members to help with the project – some have donated items and assembled boxes, while others have contributed funds to pay for the contents of the boxes and the mailing cost ($7 per box).

Boxes include items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, brushes, washcloths, bars of soap, notebooks, crayons, pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, ballpoint pens, tissue paper, jump ropes, tennis balls, harmonicas, Slinkys, Lifesavers, T-shirts, socks, flip-flops, scarves, tote bags, baseball caps and bandannas.

To donate, mail checks to Union Presbyterian Church, 858 University Ave., Los Altos 94022. To drop off items, stop by the church office.

For more information, call 948-4361 or visit unionpc.org.
