Author Randi Zuckerberg invites young readers to unplug in new book

Zuckerberg

When Los Altos author Randi Zuckerberg stops by Linden Tree Books at 4 p.m. Monday to present a reading of her new children’s book, she’ll be flipping through the pages to emphasize a point.

For this marketing maven, primarily associated with her years at Facebook Inc., the print book offers families a chance to unplug from their screens and connect through real-life experiences.

“Children today need digital literacy – these are the tools that are going to get them employed later in life,” Zuckerberg told the Town Crier. “But we want to make sure that we’re not getting them in front of tech so much that they don’t have real-world skills.”

Zuckerberg’s book “Dot.” (HarperCollins, 2013) tells the story of a tech-savvy toddler who knows a lot about technology and not as much about how her skills translate to nondigital experiences. Throughout the illustrated tale, Dot explores activities away from the screen.

The goal of her book, Zuckerberg explained, is to help parents evaluate the role technology should play during childhood. To share her personal experiences, she simultaneously published a book for parents, “Dot Complicated: Untangling Our Wired Lives” (HarperCollins, 2013).

Zuckerberg said she looks forward to seeing friends, family and neighbors at the upcoming story-time and book signing.

For a full article on Zuckerberg, see the Town Crier’s Dec. 18 print edition. In addition to more about her new books, learn how she balances technology in her household.

Puppets visit Linden Tree

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula’s Puppetry Troupe is scheduled to perform “Rumpelstiltskin” 1 p.m. Saturday at the bookstore.

The troupe features marionettes made and operated by students. The play tells the tale of a miller’s daughter who seeks help from a magical little man to turn straw into gold.
