Los Altos History Museum celebrates holidays with Family Fun Fest Sunday

Beanie Babies from collector Gayle Carter of the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce decorate the 12-foot Christmas tree at the Los Altos History Museum.

The Los Altos History Museum is scheduled to celebrate the season with the “Holiday Family Fun Fest” 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the museum, 51 S. San Antonio Road.

The free family-friendly festival will include activities tailored to children.

“This time of year, it’s all about being with family and friends,” said event coordinator Pinky Whelan.

The event will feature storytelling, crafts, music and more.

Docents will offer tours of the adjacent J. Gilbert Smith House that highlight the role children played in the past.

“In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, most kids didn’t get a lot of gifts,” Whelan said. “This was way before TV and Xboxes. The radio was our entertainment – that and playing the piano and singing. Going to see a movie downtown was a big deal.”

A children’s choir will kick off the event at 2 p.m. Upstairs, guests can view the original Santa paintings from the collection of Los Altos artist Emily Hollinger. Refreshments will be served.

The Christmas tree in the museum is decorated with Beanie Babies from the collection of Gayle Carter, who works at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce.

“A friend who was collecting them said they would be of value one day,” Carter said. “I took one look at a funny-looking pelican and an adorable hedgehog and I was in love with them.”

Both collectors will be on hand at the event to chat with guests.

Children’s craft tables will be added to the main gallery to complement the current exhibition of local art, “Los Altos – Moving Art Forward.”

“Kids and adults have been fascinated with the ‘Buddha Boards,’ where you paint with water,” said Jane Reed, exhibit curator and museum board president. “When it dries, the art is gone. It’s very Zen.”
