More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony returns to downtown Los Altos Friday

Town Crier File Photo
The Mountain View High School Madrigals are scheduled to perform at Friday’s tree-lighting event in downtown Los Altos.

Los Altos will bustle with holiday activity Friday evening as the Tree Lighting Ceremony, train rides around town and live entertainment descend on downtown.

The traditional holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony returns 6 p.m. Friday at Community Plaza, corner of Main and State streets in downtown Los Altos.

Sponsored by the Los Altos Village Association (LAVA), the event is scheduled in conjunction with the First Friday activities coordinated by the downtown advocacy group Los Altos Forward.

Music ensembles from local schools, including the Madrigals from Mountain View High School and the Treble Voices from Bullis Charter School, will perform holiday favorites to kick off the tree-lighting event.

Kamrin Knight Desmond, LAVA board president, and newly appointed Los Altos Mayor Megan Satterlee will be on hand to offer holiday greetings prior to the tree lighting, slated between 6:30-6:45 p.m.

Santa Claus will make an appearance to entertain children’s wishes.

The First Friday event – with an “All Aboard for the Holidays” theme – will include free train rides courtesy of the local American Legion; browsing and shopping at retail shops and galleries, many of which offer discounts and free refreshments; and nearly 20 restaurants serving a variety of cuisines.

The event will feature drawings for hundreds of dollars in gift certificates donated by downtown merchants. Attendees can enter either by playing the “Find the Train Tickets” game at participating merchants or by purchasing merchandise that evening.

Scheduled performers include juggler Jonathan Luxton, cover band Fully Funded, a brass quartet from Los Altos High School, a guitar duo, the Black Mountain Radio string band and the Sunday Seven accordion group. The performers will be stationed at various storefronts throughout downtown.

Los Altos Forward, a program of the Los Altos Community Foundation, is a volunteer group dedicated to promoting vibrancy in downtown Los Altos. First Fridays are designed to provide a fun, social and community-building evening for local residents.

For game information and to enter the drawing, visit First Friday headquarters inside Know Knew Books at 366 State St.

For more information on First Fridays, call 949-5282 or visit losaltosfirstfriday.org or downtownlosaltos.org.
