After a few years in the dark, the traditional holiday tree-lighting ceremony returns 6-8 p.m. Dec. 6 at Community Plaza, corner Main and State streets in downtown Los Altos.
Sponsored by the Los Altos Village Association (LAVA), the event is scheduled in conjunction with the First Friday activities coordinated by the downtown advocacy group Los Altos Forward.
Although LAVA traditionally serves as the event’s chief sponsor, Executive Director Nancy Dunaway said this year’s tree lighting is a team effort. In addition to Los Altos Forward, Rotary Club of Los Altos members will provide refreshments. LAVA plans to purchase a 14-foot tree from the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, which uses funds from tree sales for community service projects. City of Los Altos staff will help with tree decorations.
Music ensembles from local schools, including the Madrigals from Mountain View High School and Treble Voices, the Bullis Charter School chorus, will perform holiday favorites to kick off the festivities.
Kamrin Knight Desmond, LAVA board president, and the newly appointed Los Altos mayor will be on hand to offer holiday greetings prior to the tree lighting, slated between 6:30-6:45 p.m.
Santa Claus will entertain children’s wishes.
Budget cuts forced the suspension of the tree-lighting event in 2010. Its return this year is the result of the improved economic climate, Dunaway said.
