Letters to the Editor

Participate – for the sake of art

Last weekend, my wife and I enjoyed touring several of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s “Project Los Altos” exhibits.

We found the most interesting part in the back room of 359 State St., exploring the exhibit “Everything Is Perfect.” We talked at length with charming Czech artist Katerina Šedá. She is becoming widely known on both sides of the Atlantic for her installation art – she has done work at the Berlin Biennale, the Tate Modern, the University of Chicago and numerous other sites. She has brought to Los Altos a similar social artwork.

Her exhibit is a web-based framework in the form of a contest that challenges Los Altos residents to write what makes them exceptional.

Everyone is best at something – what is it? She creates a game that may be comfortable for children but can be a challenge for competitive adults. And what a great challenge it is to come up with something humorous and out of the ordinary! (One child claims to have the largest collection of roly-polys.)

Šedá asks us to share that uniqueness with others and complete the project by submitting a listing. The final artwork is created by residents, but only if we participate.

Spotlighting another ‘Festival of Lights’

Put down that turkey leg! Stop checking that list! The Lively Foundation’s “Festival of Lights” is here to remind you of the reasons for the season.

Lively’s “Festival of Lights” is a concert featuring songs, dances, theater and storytelling, all related to light in many holidays at the end of the calendar year.

After 15 years of applause from a dedicated following in San Francisco, The Lively Foundation will brighten the mid-Peninsula with the “Festival of Lights” 3 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Mountain View Masonic Center, 890 Church St.

Guest artists include elves, ribbon dancers, a dragon, Jonathan Clark on bass and dancers Julia Canavese, Amity Johnson, Vanessa Nudd and Etta Walton. I am the production’s choreographer and writer.

Forget about searching for parking – there is a lot of free parking around the Masonic Center and its own lot right behind the building – just let your little light shine. The “Festival of Lights” will renew your personal energy source.

Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 over age 65 or under 10.

For tickets and more information, visit livelyfoundation.org

‘Master Tech’ offers valuable advice

One of my favorite Town Crier features is “Ask the Master Tech.” Warren McCord’s pragmatic advice is very useful to all drivers. We are indeed fortunate to benefit from his expertise.

I never miss reading his column, and I remind family members to do likewise.

‘Prime Time Dads’ available at Linden Tree Books

Thank you for that wonderful article on Len Filppu’s appearance at Linden Tree Books to discuss his book “Prime Time Dads: 45 Reasons to Embrace Midlife Fatherhood” (“Author touts joys, advantages of ‘prime time’ fatherhood,” Nov. 20).

Our only wish is that you could have mentioned that “Prime Time Dads” is available at our lovely brick-and-mortar independent bookstore!

Los Altos Town Crier readers can buy and order books at Linden Tree rather than going online to help keep a great children’s independent bookstore in Los Altos.
