Two MVLA students earn perfect ACT scores

The Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District reported improved student scores on the 2013 ACT, a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions that is accepted by all major U.S. colleges.

The district composite average for the ACT was 27 (the state average is 22.2). The national average for the percent of ACT-tested students ready for college-level work is 26 percent, while the MVLA average is 67 percent.

Two district students – Seraphine Goh of Mountain View High School and Sam Lisbonne of Los Altos High School – earned perfect composite scores of 36 on the recent ACT exam. Nationally, approximately one-tenth of 1 percent of students earn a top score. Among those taking the test in the high school graduating class of 2013, only 1,162 out of nearly 1.8 million students earned the perfect composite score.

The ACT comprises tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores.

ACT CEO Jon Whitmore wrote in a letter recognizing their achievement, “Your exceptional scores will provide any colleges to which you choose to apply ample evidence of your readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead. Test scores are just one of multiple criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions.”
