OBIT LoraineHawks1
OBIT LoraineHawks2

September 26, 1921 - November 11, 2013

Resident of San Jose

Loraine Hawks entered into rest on November 11, 2013 at the age of 92. She was born on September 26th, 1921 in Park Ridge, Illinois to Florence Koenig and Hill Koenig, a prominent Burlington Railroad executive. She was a resident of the Villages Country Club in San Jose for the past 19 years. Before moving to San Jose, she was a long time resident of Los Altos.   Survivors include her beloved husband of 62 years, Ernest Hawks, a son Eric Hawks (Lesley) of Mountain View, CA, three grandchildren, who were the light of her life, Kaitlin Stonum (Robert) of Cupertino, CA, Nathan Hawks of San Francisco, CA, Samuel Hawks of Palo Alto, CA, and their mother Jennifer Hawks of Palo Alto, CA.

She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin, as well as a Masters Degree in Education and Teaching Credential from Stanford University. She taught Physical Education at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and in 1951 she took up residence in Los Altos, where she assumed the role of Dean of Women at Mountain View High School between 1951- 1957. Later she worked alongside her husband at Lawson - Hawks Insurance Associates as an Accounting Executive from 1970 to 1980.

Loraine was a kind and charitable woman who always maintained a positive outlook and cheerful disposition. Her warm and friendly smile would put even a stranger at ease. Her keen sense of fairness enabled her to see both sides of every situation. She had a love for cooking and entertaining as she opened her home and her heart to many including friends, family, neighbors, Rotary exchange students and Stanford students. She loved sports of all types, was an avid golfer and participated in synchronized swimming in her early adult years. Her son Eric recalls her teaching him touch football as a youth.

She was a former member of the Los Altos Golf and Country Club; an active member of Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA to this date, and was responsible for organizing the “Desert 9er’s”, a Woman's 9 Hole Golf group in Palm Desert that grew to 16 clubs and 900 members.

Loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, educator, friend and colleague you will be greatly missed by all.

A Memorial Service will be held for Loraine at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21st, 2013 at the Spangler Mortuary at 399 South San Antonio Road, Los Altos, CA, 94022; burial at the Alta Mesa Cemetery, and a reception will follow immediately afterwards at the Elks Lodge 4249 El Camino Real,  Palo Alto, CA 94306.
