S. GEORGE SANREGRET

OBIT GeorgeSanregret
OBIT GeorgeSanregret2

S. George Sanregret passed away peacefully on November 9th, 2013 in Grass Valley, CA. He was 85.

George was born October 23, 1928 in Houghton Michigan to Emile and Gladys Sanregret. He attended Houghton High School, where he was an outstanding athlete participating in the Northern Michigan All Star football game in 1946. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in economics from Marquette University and also a management certificate from the University of Michigan.

George joined the Air Force during the Korean War and was a First Lieutenant graduating first in his navigation class. He was the adjutant to the Wing Commander at Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln, Nebraska and while stationed there met Maryann Day of Lincoln Nebraska and the two were married. The couple moved to Los Altos, CA in 1956.

In 1959 George went to work for the City of Los Altos and in 1962 was named City Manager where he remained until 1984. During his tenure he oversaw the strategic development that turned a sleepy orchard suburb into the wonderful community that Los Altos is today. In 1986 after retirement, he and Maryann moved to Nevada City, California.

George was an avid sports fan his entire life. He loved the San Francisco 49ers and was a 49er season ticket holder for 40 years. He and a group of friends formed “The Big Ten” and attended Super Bowl XVI in Detroit, MI and watched the 49ers defeat the Cincinnati Bengals. He was an active card player, especially duplicate bridge. He also enjoyed playing dominoes and working crossword puzzles.

George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maryann, son Sam and his wife Judy, son Matthew and his wife Yolanda, and daughter-in-law Julie Sanregret. George was extremely proud of his six grandchildren: Grant (Jennifer), Nicholas, June, Mitchell, Henry, and Mollie, and his great grandchild Vance. He is also survived by his sister Helen Stenborg, brother John O. Sanregret (Janice), sister Mary Healy, and his many loving nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his sons Theodore and William.

Always a gentleman to all, he lived a full life surrounded by a loving family and many wonderful friends who will miss him dearly.

A family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sierra Hospital – 154 Glasson Way, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
