Eagles fall to Wildcats in CCS quarterfinals

Ellie Van Houtte/Town Crier
No. 3 player Whitney Mathews posted Los Altos’ lone win in singles Friday against St. Ignatius.

After clipping Leland in the second round of the Central Coast Section playoffs, the Los Altos High girls tennis team met its match in the quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Eagles fell 4-3 to No. 5 St. Ignatius Friday.

“They have a little more depth than we do,” Los Altos coach Hung Nguyen said of the Wildcats, champions of the West Catholic Athletic League. “We were just one match short. But I’m proud of my girls – they played as hard as they could.”

None of the seven matches went to three sets.

Host Los Altos mustered just one win in singles, courtesy of No. 3 player Whitney Mathews. The Eagles top two doubles teams – Carina Burdick-Avery Ikeda and Elizabeth Fuchs-Haley Jones – prevailed in straight sets as well.

Mathews, a junior, “won handily,” Nguyen said, while sophomore Burdick and senior Ikeda “took care of business” by not losing a game. Fuchs and Jones won both sets in tiebreakers.

Los Altos’ top two singles players didn’t fare as well. Sophomore Juliette Martin faced a tough opponent at No. 1, according to the coach, while senior Kacey Incerpi suffered her first loss of the year.

The Eagles, who edged visiting Leland 4-3 two days earlier, finished the season 13-8.

“I’m pretty happy – the season turned out better than I thought,” said Nguyen, whose team placed third in the daunting SCVAL De Anza Division. “Making it to the quarterfinals is pretty good.”

The season isn’t over for all the Eagles, however. Four girls have qualified for the CCS individual playoffs, scheduled Monday and Tuesday at Courtside Club in Los Gatos. Martin and Burdick made it in singles; Incerpi and Mathews will join forces in doubles.

Lancers also ousted

St. Francis lasted as long as Los Altos in CCS. The sixth-seeded Lancers fell 4-3 to No. 3 Monta Vista Friday in Cupertino.

St. Francis (14-6) crushed Carmel 7-0 in the second round.
