Safe Streets Task Force makes two arrests in cold-case homicide

The Santa Clara County Violent Gang Task Force arrested two men Nov. 8 for their role in a 2004 Mountain View cold-case homicide.

According to Stephanie Douglas, special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office, police arrested Anthony Figueroa, 23, for murder, and Arthur Figueroa, 49, for perjury. The father and son are residents of Mountain View.

Both were arrested without incident.

The night of Sept. 24, 2004, 17-year-old Alejandro “Alex” Fernandez was walking with friends on the 500 block of South Rengstorff Avenue when five people pulled up in a car.

As Fernandez approached the car, which was driven by Anthony Figueroa, passenger Giovanni Duarte, who is currently in custody, allegedly shot Fernandez in the chest. Fernandez was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooting was allegedly gang related.

The arrests were made based on state charges, and Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Frank Carrubba is prosecuting the case.

Duarte, 24, of Mountain View, was arrested March 23 for the murder.

The county’s Violent Gang Task Force, part of the FBI’s Safe Streets program, began investigating the case in January 2010. The task force comprises law enforcement personnel from the FBI in San Francisco, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and the Mountain View and San Jose police departments.

Safe Streets is an FBI-sponsored task force that combats violent street crime and gang and drug-trafficking offenses.
