SVCF planning 24-hour fundraising event for 2014

The Mountain View-based Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) is scheduled to host the inaugural “Silicon Valley Gives” May 6.

The fundraiser is designed to benefit local nonprofit organizations and inspire others to support philanthropic causes.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of community foundations, SVCF will raise money for local nonprofits through a single online donation platform, providing a way to connect donors to the charitable causes they care about most and encourage them to take action.

One of the pillars of SVCF’s mission is to strengthen the common good locally. The 24-hour online fundraising effort will give the community foundation the opportunity to raise millions of dollars for thousands of nonprofits in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The event will also offer an opportunity for donors to become involved and will provide training for a broad range of nonprofit agencies.

“‘Silicon Valley Gives’ will engage both corporate and individual donors in working together to support our region’s entire nonprofit sector – something that has never happened here before,” said Emmett D. Carson, president and chief executive officer of the foundation. “Whether you are a longtime contributor to charities or a first-time donor who has $20 to donate to help your neighbors, this event will provide an opportunity for everyone in our region to give back to their community while also growing the capacity of local nonprofits to continue their great work.”

Microsoft Corp. will serve as lead sponsor of “Silicon Valley Gives,” contributing both leadership and technology to the effort.

“‘Silicon Valley Gives’ will spread the word that everyone can be a philanthropist and make a real difference to meeting the needs of his or her community,” said Dan’l Lewin, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for strategic and emerging business development, who heads the company’s operations in Mountain View.
