Pinewood alum McClannan Reardon embarks on solo singing career, releases Christmas album

Courtesy of Megan McClannan Reardon
Megan McClannan Reardon caught the performing bug while attending Pinewood School in Los Altos.

Life is good for Los Altos Hills native Megan McClannan Reardon. The singer/actress plans to release a Christmas album after a long recording hiatus, a project she completed while raising two young daughters and working as a musical director in her current home of Salt Lake City.

“Dreams of Christmas,” recently released on iTunes and Amazon.com, is a collection of familiar favorites and originals.

Being a solo act is new territory for Reardon, who has been a busy backup studio vocalist for the likes of Celine Dion and Stevie Wonder. The former Disney entertainer signed a 10-year contract when she was 20, a contract that seemed like a good idea at the time. But because of a variety of factors, she wasn’t able to record until the contract expired. Now she’s with LML Music.

Reardon has performed all over the world, singing and dancing with national and international touring companies. She’s even appeared on the TV series “Charmed” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Reardon credits teacher Kathy Pickett at her alma mater Pinewood School with encouraging her aspirations. Pinewood requires all fourth-graders to take part in a performance. Once she hit the stage, there was no turning back.

She turned professional at 16 when she was cast in “42nd Street” at American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Later, she won a scholarship to Brigham Young University for excellence in musical theater. She has been a private voice teacher the past 20 years and a program director for a performing arts school.

Now, she embarks on a solo career that begins with a Christmas album.

“Maybe they’ll buy it as a Christmas gift,” said Reardon of her potential audience. “No one is (usually) buying CDs anymore.”

With support from pianist and friend Joseph Itaya, Reardon traveled to a recording studio in Los Angeles for one 18-hour session. The pair had booked the weekend but “got bumped by Cher,” she said. The finished project, however, was a year in the making.

Reardon hopes this will be the start of a successful solo career.

“My backup days are done,” she said.

One goal is to perform at the Hollywood Bowl.

“It’s just so fun,” she said. “It would be my chocolate ice cream on top of my cake.”

Reardon has scheduled a performance Dec. 14 at Menlo-Atherton Arts Center. Local crooner Pasquale Esposito also will perform.
