More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

Reader appreciates Rhymin’ Simon’s poetry

I was delighted to read the poem “To Jake,” Bob Simon’s ode to his first grandchild (Senior Lifestyles, Nov. 6).

Bob is a very talented Los Altan whose poetry conveys ordinary life in perfect meter, rhythm and rhyme.

I commend the Town Crier for publishing his poetry, and I understand that it will be a regular feature in the Senior Lifestyles section every two months. However, I almost missed it until it was pointed out to me in the paper. It appeared on page 31, in the back of the Senior Lifestyles section.

Bob’s poems appeal to all ages, not just seniors, and I hope the Town Crier will publish his next poems in a more prominent section of the newspaper.

Sunnyvale imposes ‘brave’ gun restrictions

Re Measure C, Sunnyvale’s gun-control legislation that passed with 66 percent of the vote Nov. 4: Finally, a mayor, a city council and voters had the courage to pass their own gun-control measures when our Congress and state do not have the guts to pass any substantial legislation.

In the past, it has been Los Altos that took the lead locally to do good things for the community. Los Altos was first in banning gas leaf blowers, blocking a garbage dump at Permanente and helping to stop general air traffic at Moffett Field from flying over our heads. Now Sunnyvale took the lead with its brave restrictions on guns.

Hopefully, this will send a message to neighboring communities that something can be done on the local level and that we will not be intimidated by the big-bully National Rifle Association.

Shame on Los Gatos for allowing a gun store to open downtown. I hope that other city councils will be wiser and not issue a permit to such a business and follow Sunnyvale’s lead with restrictions.
