TERESA MARGARET HURLEY

OBIT TeresaMargaretHurley1
OBIT TeresaMargaretHurley2

1927 – 2013

It is with great sadness and gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Teresa Margaret Hurley, known to most as “Nanny”. Terry was born on February 11, 1927 in Somerville, Massachusetts to Kenneth and Isabel Chisholm and was one of nine children. Raised and educated in Somerville, she was voted Miss Somerville in 1946 at the young age of 19. Terry left the Boston area after marrying Ben Hurley, the love of her life, to whom she was married for 60 years. Ben and Terry lived in five different cities on the East and West coasts while following Ben’s career, eventually landing in Los Altos Hills with their six children, which was their home for 43 years. She simply loved the Los Altos and Saint Nicholas communities. Although Terry was away from Boston for many years, she never lost her love for her roots, family or her Boston accent. She was truly bicoastal.

Terry was an active member of her community and often volunteered her time to support Saint Nicholas Parish and School as well as Saint Francis High School. She was a true fan of all St. Francis sports, the San Francisco 49ers, all Boston teams and any team or activity that involved her grandchildren or their friends. There were no strangers in Terry’s life. Terry believed everyone was connected and had a gift for finding that connection and making them lifelong friends. She had a beautiful spirit and made everyone feel welcome.

Terry is survived by her loving husband Ben and their six children, Terry Symula (George) of Harvard, MA, Bernard Hurley of Denver, CO, Ken Hurley (Ginny) of San Jose, CA, Betsy Komo (John) of Los Altos, CA, Nancy Fiegel (Don) of Pleasanton, CA and Dan (Amy) Hurley of Littleton, CO. Nanny was extremely proud of her grandchildren, Danielle, Matt, Michael, Tommy, Timmy, Lizzy, Madeline, Caroline, Jennifer, Andrew, KC, David, Katie and her two great-grandchildren, Seth and Emma as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her younger brothers, Larry Chisholm (Judy) of Danvers, MA and Billy Chisholm (Judy) of Amesbury, MA and by many wonderful friends (you know who you are). Terry is predeceased by her sisters Betty, Isabel, Marian, Ruthie and brothers Kenneth and John, as well as her grandchildren, Teresa and Benjamin. Our beautiful angel, Terry, is now in heaven with them and shining her sparkling blue eyes down on all of us.

We will be celebrating Terry’s life with a Rosary on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 pm at St. Nicholas Church, 473 Lincoln Avenue, Los Altos, CA. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. William Church, 611 S El Monte Ave, Los Altos, CA at 1:30pm on Saturday November 16. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to St. Nicholas School Endowment Fund –Terry Hurley, c/o St. Nicholas Church, 473 Lincoln Avenue, Los Altos, CA 94022. Arrangements by Spangler Mortuary, Los Altos, CA.
