Christ Episcopal hosts documentary screening

Christ Episcopal Church is scheduled to host a screening of “High Ground,” an award-winning documentary, 6:30 p.m. today at the church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos.

The film chronicles the story of 11 wounded warriors and one Gold Star mother who climb Mount Lobuche in the Himalayas while recounting their wartime experiences. “High Ground” cinematographer John von Seeburg will lead a Q&A with local veterans following the screening.

Admission is free.

SPARC speaker addresses Obamacare

The South Peninsula Area Republican Coalition has scheduled author Sally C. Pipes to discuss health care at its next meeting, 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge, 4249 El Camino Real.

Pipes, president and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, is a vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act. Her book, “The Cure for Obamacare” (Encounter Books, 2013), examines changes that could halt full implementation of the law. She will discuss what she considers a better alternative for effective health care.

Pipes regularly addresses national and international audiences on health care. Her opinion pieces have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Kiwanis Club accepts grant requests

The Kiwanis Club of Mountain View Foundation is currently accepting grant requests for projects that meet a critical health or human care need in the city of Mountain View.

Grant requests should address the needs of children under the age of 18 or seniors 60 and over and have objectives that are time-specific and measurable.

Organizations submitting requests must show proof of 501(c)(3) status by providing a copy of their federal tax-exempt notification letters.

The club will consider requests for capital campaign projects that are consistent with its priority to provide services to low-income children, adolescents or seniors.

The deadline for submission of grant applications is Dec. 1.

Funds will be granted at either a January or February Kiwanis Club of Mountain View meeting.

Boutique fundraiser supports animal shelter

A pet and gift boutique fund- raiser is scheduled 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 16 at Palo Alto Animal Services, 3281 E. Bayshore Road.

The event will feature holiday gifts and products, raffle prizes, a silent auction, pet adoptions and refreshments.

The animal control agency, which provides services for Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, has been hit by heavy funding cuts over the past few years. Proceeds will directly benefit the shelter.

Palo Alto Animal Services and Hartfelt Hand-i-crafts co-sponsor the boutique.

Kiwanis Club sponsors Turkey Round Up

The Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, sponsor of the annual Pet Parade in May, seeks donations for its 2013 Turkey Round Up.

Kiwanis Club members will purchase and deliver turkeys to The Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto so that families in need can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
