More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

FHDA seeks volunteers for bond oversight committee

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District seeks district residents to serve on its Measure C Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee.

Volunteers are needed to fill two-year terms in four capacities:

• At-large representative

• Taxpayer association representative

• Business organization representative

• Foothill-De Anza auxiliary organization representative

The seven-member committee reviews expenditures associated with the $490.8 million bond measure approved by district voters in 2006 and reports annually to the public and the board of trustees on the implementation of the Measure C bond program.

The committee meets quarterly. New members would be seated in January.

Applicants must reside within district boundaries, which include the cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Cupertino, Sunnyvale and parts of San Jose, Santa Clara and Saratoga. District employees, contractors, consultants or vendors are not eligible to serve.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 15. Applicants should email a résumé that includes home address and a cover letter explaining their qualifications and which of the four categories they would represent to This email address is being protected from spambots. “I have enjoyed serving on the committee because I have had the opportunity to work with interesting and intelligent people, both fellow committee members and staff members of the colleges,” said Chairman Dudley G. Andersen. “I’ve been able to represent the community by providing oversight and feedback on the use of bond funds to create facilities that bring the colleges continuing recognition as leaders in community education and also offer exceptional learning environments for students.”

Members who will be leaving the committee at the end of the year include Andersen, at-large representative; Robert Lancefield, taxpayer association representative; David Bergman, business organization representative; and Anita Manwani Bhagat, auxiliary organization representative.

Continuing on the committee are William Dietz, senior citizens’ organization representative; Susan Silver, at-large representative; and Etienne Bowie, student representative.
