SHIRLEY SWINTEK MCCAULEY

OBIT ShirleyMcCauley

Born in Royal Oak, Michigan, on November 4, 1935, Shirley succumbed to the effects of Parkinson’s on October 1, 2013.

Always eager to learn everything and to assist others, Shirley Swintek McCauley conducted her life as many others only wish they could.

After moving to California with her mother and two brothers, she lived with them in Los Angeles and Long Beach, putting herself through college by working full time and earning her BA Degree in Business Administration. She applied these skills at IBM in Long Beach and Los Angeles, serving as a Systems Service Representative.

Upon marriage and moving to the Bay Area, Shirley continued many activities with the American Association of University Women, Los Madres, the Career Action Center in Palo Alto, as a teachers aide at both the Los Altos and Palo Alto Elementary School Districts, as board member at the Mountain View and Los Altos Cooperative Nursery schools, and participating in the development of the Mountain View Parent Preschool. As a member of Foothills Congregational Church in Los Altos, Shirley served in numerous capacities for many years, including Deaconesses and Wedding Coordinator.

Further, she expanded her interests and activities to the English In Action Program for foreign students and their families at Stanford and to volunteering at Filoli, and then to establishing and operating her own business, Extra Time.

Shirley’s trademarks were her optimism, delightful nature, intelligence and sterling character traits. She is survived by her son Scott and daughter Alison, grandchildren Wyatt & Eleanor, and her loving husband of 52 years, Donald, all of whom dearly loved and revered her.

A memorial service will be held at the Foothills Congregational Church, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos, Calif. on Saturday 2 November at 11:00 AM.
