Mountain View High’s Elyse Fitzsimons goes for the block.

Cupertino’s goal must have looked as big as a commercial fishing net to the Mountain View High girls water polo team, which pasted the Pioneers 20-2 Thursday.

The host Spartans put up 11 goals in the second quarter to lead 15-2 at halftime.

Nine players scored in the game for Mountain View, led by Kate Atherton’s four goals.

Senior Izzy Dickerson “had a great all-around game,” coach Drew Enlow said, notching three goals, two assists and four steals.

“She did all of this with no turnovers or ejections in the game,” the coach added.

Samantha Hartman and Hope Moseley also scored three goals each for the Spartans, who improved to 6-1 in the SCVAL El Camino Division, 10-3 overall.

Los Altos defeated Palo Alto 8-4 in SCVAL De Anza Division play Oct. 8. Jenna Gavenman paced the visiting Eagles (4-2 league, 6-9 overall) with four goals and Ya’el Weiner had three.

Boys water polo

Mountain View shut out Los Gatos in the middle quarters of Thursday’s De Anza Division game and won 7-5 on the road.

Spartan coach Gabor Sarusi dubbed goalie Charlie Niehaus the player of the game. He totaled 10 saves, blocking all four of the Wildcats’ six-on-five chances.

Rey Castillo and Matt Dunn scored four and three goals, respectively, for Mountain View (5-2 league, 6-5 overall). Castillo tallied six goals in a 17-12 win over Lynbrook earlier in the week.

Host Bellarmine beat rival St. Francis 12-6 Oct. 8 in West Catholic Athletic League action. Shawn Welch scored four goals for the Lancers (0-2 league).

Girls volleyball

Los Altos suffered its first league loss of the season – in four games to Palo Alto Thursday – but the host Eagles didn’t fall out of first. Los Altos is tied with Paly and Homestead for the top spot in the De Anza Division at 4-1.

Mountain View picked up its first De Anza Division victory Thursday, beating Monta Vista in four games. The Spartans went to 1-4 in league and 4-10 overall.

Three Mountain View players totaled double-digit kills: Rosa Lutz (14), Elyse Fitzsimons (13) and Megan Robinson (10).

St. Francis evened its WCAL record at 1-1 with a sweep of St. Ignatius Oct. 8. Jenna Adams recorded 14 kills for the visiting Lancers (15-6 overall).

Pinewood swept Immaculate Conception Oct. 9, improving to 3-3 in the West Bay Athletic League Skyline Division.

Field hockey

Kira Winner scored Los Altos’ lone goal in a 4-1 home loss to Cupertino Oct. 8. The Eagles slumped to 0-4 in the SCVAL.

Girls golf

St. Francis easily defeated Notre Dame-Belmont (209-226 score) and Sacred Heart Cathedral (225-250) last week in WCAL play. Nancy Xu earned medalist honors Oct. 9 against Notre Dame with a 35; Bibi Liu’s 40 led the way versus Sacred Heart Oct. 8.

Cross country

The Los Altos girls set a school record on the Woodward Park course (101 minutes, 35 seconds) and finished 10th in their division at Saturday’s Clovis Invitational.

Girls tennis

Los Altos topped rival Mountain View 6-1 in De Anza Division play Thursday.
