MV Day Worker Center supports quilt exhibition

The Day Worker Center of Mountain View has scheduled a reception marking the debut of the Community School of Music and Arts’ latest exhibition, “Connecting Threads: Quilts Made at the Day Worker Center of Mountain View,” 6-8 p.m. Oct. 25 at Mohr Gallery, 230 San Antonio Circle, Mountain View.

The exhibition runs through through Dec. 1 at Mohr Gallery.

The reception will feature a musical program written by Day Worker Center Executive Director Maria Marroquin based on four true stories of women who left their lives behind in Mexico to immigrate to California.

American composer and pianist Henry Mollicone and soprano Elena Galvan will interpret the stories of the women through the original composition “Sueños de Esperanza” (“Dreams of Hope”). Mollicone will then improvise a short musical “auction” in which audience members may participate in a unique musical experience.

Day Worker Center volunteer Naomi Zamir started the quilt-making project as part of the English through Art and Music Class, which she initiated at the Day Worker Center in 2010.

Nearly four years in the making, the quilts represent the dedication, passion and hope of the center’s dayworkers, according to Zamir, as well as the importance of community and connection that the center embodies.

Wine and appetizers will be served.

Admission is a voluntary $20 donation for the Day Worker Center, but no one will be turned away.
