Locals take top prizes at pumpkin weigh-off

NEWS pumpkinweighoffS fmt1

Dozens of farmers and gardeners from California and across the West Coast harvested their heaviest and prettiest pumpkins for the 40th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay Oct. 14.

Spectators gathered around a large stage where pumpkins were hoisted onto the official scale for weign-in. A grand prize of $25,000 was offered for any grower that delivered a world record breaking pumpkin. Although the record was not broken this year, Gary Miller of Napa, California won the top prize for the largest pumpkin at the competition with a weight of 1,985 pounds.

Los Altos resident Suzanne Kasso's pumpkin weighed in at 488-pounds at the 40th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay Oct. 14. Although her pumpkin didn’t tip the scale as the largest one – the winning pumpkin weighed 1,985 pounds – her gourd snagged second place in the contest’s Most Beautiful Pumpkin category. Her husband, Chris Kasso, won third in the category with his 686-pounder.

Los Altos Hills resident Vince Zunino joined the Kassos on the pedestal with his 200-pound pumpkin, which won first place and $500 in the same category.

In a homecoming celebration Oct. 14 , students at Covington School had a chance to admire the Kassos’ pumpkins. Watch for the Town Crier’s Oct. 23 issue for a full story on the Kasso family’s pumpkin-growing prowess.
