Foothill sponsors two-day tech conference

Foothill College is scheduled to host the second Innovative Educators Technology Conference, “Leveraging Technology to Support Students, Faculty & Staff,” noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 in the college’s Smithwick Theatre, Room 1001, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

According to Denise Swett, Ed.D., Foothill’s vice president of student services, the two-day conference is designed for faculty, staff and administrators from K-12 schools and two- and four-year colleges and universities.

Attendees can learn how inventive technology-based solutions can reduce staff overload, engage students, support innovative instruction, promote career opportunities and supplement services impacted by budgetary reductions. Presenters will focus on how to use technology to improve student support and staff development so that educators do more with less.

The conference will feature keynote addresses by Alexis Ringwald, LearnUp co-founder and CEO; Candace Thiele, Stanford University Graduate School of Education assistant professor; Andrew Maguire, InternMatch founder and CEO; Chuck Geiger, chief technology officer at Chegg; and Elizabeth Slavitt of Khan Academy.

Workshop topics include using a flipped classroom, leveraging analytics, building mobile apps for higher education and increasing online student retention.

“With increasingly limited resources and high demands from students, faculty and staff, institutions are finding it difficult to provide effective support services,” Swett said. “We want educators from our community to come explore a wide range of technology solutions that are focused on supporting student success, such as teaching and learning, learning analytics, mobile applications, Massive Open Online Courses and professional development. There will also be a special strand on using technology for communicating about campus safety.”

The conference is underwritten by sponsors and exhibitors, and does not expend any college or public funds.

Admission is free and includes registration, parking, exhibit-hall access, giveaways and a continental breakfast and lunch Oct. 25. Register in advance for free conference admission.

Parking lots 1, 7 and 8 provide the best access to the theater.
