Public invited to participate in open space planning

COVER-FoothillsPark

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (District) is hosting a Vision Plan Board Workshop 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the district’s administrative office, 330 Distel Circle. A second workshop may be scheduled 6 p.m. Oct. 9 if more time is needed to evaluate the proposed projects of the vision plan. Members of the public are invited to participate in the workshop(s) to help the board shape the direction of future open space projects.

As part of a 16-month Vision Plan Project that began in August 2012, a Community Advisory Committee identified future use goals and project possibilities. Also during this time scientists examined the open space district to understand potential challenges in meeting the desired outcomes of the plan.

Five key themes for future growth were identified by the vision team: healthy nature, viable working lands, outdoor recreation and healthy living, natural, cultural and scenic landscapes and enriched experience. In phase three, the district will reach out to district residents to help the board determine the specific projects to prioritize or dismiss from the list of desired outcomes and priority actions.

Among the projects under consideration for the Peninsula Foothills subregion – the area of the district that encompasses most of Los Altos Hills – are the development of improved transit and parking options for Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, improved public access to and preservation of agricultural fields at Hidden Villa, restoration of fisheries in the San Francisquito Creek Watershed and the completion of Stevens Creek Trail above the Steven Creek Reservoir dam.

After gathering preliminary input, another series of public meeting will be held in October and November to further define goals in subregions of the district. Board members anticipate the adoption of a final Vision Plan by early 2014.
