Runners from Los Altos and Mountain View highs finished one-two in last week’s varsity girls race at the second SCVAL meet of the year.
Los Altos sophomore Lauren Jacob won the Sept. 24 race, finishing in 17 minutes, 52.9 seconds. Jacob completed the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in under 18 minutes for the first time, according to coach Dan Oren, and her time ranks 129th all-time at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
Mountain View senior Melissa Reed secured second place by clocking 18:14.9.
Two more Spartans placed in the top 10: juniors Amy Lynch (19:26.1) and Carina Gwennap (19:27.9).
Mountain View “ran strong,” coach Craig Blockhus said, finishing second to Monta Vista in the team competition. Los Altos placed fourth.
The Los Altos boys took third – losing a tiebreaker to Los Gatos for the second spot – “which was a great effort, considering a few of the boys’ top runners were not competing,” Oren said.
Dane Tippett and Konrad Niemiec led Los Altos by placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Both seniors set personal records: Tippett ran a 16:37.7; Niemiec came in at 16:40.
The Eagles followed this with a fourth-place finish in Division II at Saturday’s Stanford Invitational. Ben Zaeske guided Los Altos with an 11th-place finish (personal-best 16:32) on the 5k course.
Jacob set a personal record on the course as well; her time of 18:39 was good enough for fourth place. The Los Altos girls finished 19th in Division II.
St. Francis freshman Julia Bounds won the race in a school-record 18:14.3. The Lancers placed ninth in Division II.
