More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

A reason to ride: The Bicycle Outfitter hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Ride

Photos courtesy of Bicycle Outfitters
The Bicycle Outfitter’s Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Ride draws more than 200 cyclists annually. Riders often display the names of loved ones affected by the disease.

A horde of cyclists will soon gather in Los Altos to ride for a worthy cause.

The Bicycle Outfitter, located at 963 Fremont Ave., is scheduled to host its sixth annual “Ride for Cause,” the Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Ride, Oct. 12. The fundraising ride benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Cyclists riding the 50-mile route start at 8 a.m., the 25-mile route begins at 9 a.m. and the 10-mile riders leave at 10 a.m.

The Los Altos store is one of approximately 100 Trek Bicycle dealers that host the ride nationwide.

“It’s the biggest event we have all year,” said Dave Prion, the store’s general manager. “It’s for a great cause, and I do get people who will stop me at the grocery store, for instance, and thank me for doing it.”

Prion noted that the local event typically draws 200 or more cyclists and raises approximately $6,000 annually. The store has placed fifth (out of 100) in fund-raising and attendance each year. This year’s riding fee, the bulk of the funds contributed to the cause, is $30 per cyclist.

The Los Altos ride is unique in that it features a 50-mile ride, in addition to the 10- and 25-mile routes typically offered by other participating Trek dealers. Detailed maps of the three routes are available on the store’s website.

Prion said it’s common to see riders display the names of breast cancer survivors and victims on participants’ racing jerseys.

“This is not just about raising money,” he said. “It’s about the camaraderie. … This is about bringing people together.”

The day includes a complimentary lunch provided by Tom’s Depot, a raffle with prizes donated by The Bicycle Outfitters’ vendors and Loyola Corners’ merchants Allied Auto Works and Los Altos Health & Fitness.
