Mountain View hosts Plaza Palooza

The city of Mountain View Community Services Department has scheduled Plaza Palooza 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Mountain View Civic Center Plaza, 500 Castro St.

Plaza Palooza is the first in a series of free entertainment events slated the first Friday of each month. The evenings will feature entertainment, food and beverages.

Josh Friedman and Friends! is set to perform at the inaugural event. Friedman, a modern classical guitarist, has written, performed and recorded with the progressive rock band Fractal and recorded with the Saint Michael Trio.

Organizers recommend that attendees bring chairs or blankets to sit on. The event will take place rain or shine.

Pathways breakfast features ‘Argo’ author

Pathways Home Health & Hospice has scheduled its 23rd annual One from the Heart Awards Breakfast 7:30-9:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel, 4290 El Camino Real, Palo Alto.

The event honors volunteers and organizations for their contributions in promoting the Pathways mission to provide compassionate, family-centered care.

Keynote speaker Tony Mendez is a retired CIA agent and author of “Argo,” the book that inspired the Academy Award-winning movie. As chief of disguise at the CIA, he devised and conducted an operation to rescue six American diplomats from Iran during the late-1970s hostage crisis, for which he received the Intelligence Star of Valor. Mendez and his wife, Jonna, will tell the story behind the book and movie.

Committee seeks volunteer honorees

The Los Altos and Los Altos Hills Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards Committee invites local organizations to nominate volunteers for the 2013 awards. Nominees must be individuals or organizations whose volunteer service benefited the communities of Los Altos and/or Los Altos Hills. The nominating form must be completed and accompanied by a minimum of two supporting letters of recommendation from individuals or groups.

The Awards Committee will select the awardees from those nominated and by mid-November notify those who submitted nominations if their nominee is selected to receive an award. Luncheon invitations will be sent out the first week in November.

The committee is scheduled to honor the winners Dec. 13 at a luncheon at Fremont Hills Country Club in Los Altos Hills.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 13.

LAH organizes ‘Old-Timers’ event

The Los Altos Hills History Committee has scheduled an “Old-Timers” gathering for people who have lived in town for 35-plus years 2-5 p.m. Oct. 20 at town hall, 26379 W. Fremont Road.
