"Heights" comes down Sunday

Palo Alto Players’ Peninsula premiere of the musical “In the Heights” is slated to close Sunday at the Lucie Stern Theater, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

“Heights” has been described as an uplifting celebration of life that looks at the value of family, heritage and home.

In the shadow of the George Washington Bridge, the corner bodega in the vibrant upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights serves a café con leche as light and sweet as the breezes carrying the infectious rhythms of its music – salsa, merengue, hip-hop and pop. It’s the music of three generations, each pulsating with change, full of hope and dreams for success in the Dominican-American-flavored slice of the Big Apple.

The play came to Broadway in 2008 and ran for more than 1,100 performances. It won four Tony awards and a Grammy.

The cast features Linda Piccone of Los Altos (starring as Abuela) and Sasha Motalygo of Mountain View (Camila). Other cast members include Jia Taylor (Vanessa), Dimitri Woods (Benny), Rudy Fuentes (Usnavi), Dave Leon (Kevin), Vanessa Alvarez (Daniela), Lucy Duran (Carla), Brian Conway (Sonny), Alexa Ortega (Nina) and Mark Alabanza (Piragüero).

Alex Perez directs the production, with assistance from choreographer Robyn Tribuzi, musical director Matthew Mattei, stage manager Jeff Grafton and scenery designer Patrick Klein.

Performances are scheduled 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $17-$45.

For tickets and more information, call 329-0891 or visit paplayers.org.
