Mountain View sinks Harker in girls water polo

There was no doubt about this one. The Mountain View High girls water polo team dominated Harker from start to finish Thursday, prevailing 17-0.

The Spartans led 5-0 after one quarter, doubling their advantage by halftime. Eight players scored for Mountain View in its first shutout of the season.

Spartans coach Drew Enlow said junior Arlynda Huerta “was strong on both offense and defense,” totaling three goals, three assists and two steals.

Mountain View, which crushed Cupertino 19-5 two days earlier, improved to 2-0 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 6-2 overall.

Los Altos opened its SCVAL De Anza Division slate with a 14-3 loss at Gunn Thursday.

Kimberlyn Tilley scored twice and Ellen Roper had the Eagles’ other goal. Goalie Romy Aboudarham made 18 saves.

The Eagles then fell 15-6 to Leland Friday; Tilley and Ya’el Wiener scored two goals each.

Host St. Francis skunked Menlo-Atherton 9-0 Friday, scoring six goals by halftime. Courtney Batcheller totaled four goals.

Girls volleyball

Los Altos swept host Harker Thursday, raising its overall record to 6-2. Michelle Albright and Carmen Annevelink tallied 14 and 13 kills, respectively, for the Eagles.

Behind a balanced attack, Mountain View topped Lynbrook in three games Friday. The Spartans improved to 2-6 with strong performances from Megan Robinson (nine kills, six aces, 14 assists), Elyse Fitzsimons (eight kills, two blocks), Rosa Lutz (eight kills, three aces) and Moira Huang (five kills, three aces).

Earlier in the week, Mountain View lost in three games to Presentation. Maegan Nevalsky (five kills), Fitzsimons (four kills, six blocks) and Robinson (two kills, five blocks, five aces) led the Spartans Sept. 16.

Paced by Taylor Poncetta, St. Francis won three nonleague matches at home last week. The senior notched 15 kills Sept. 16 in a sweep of Menlo-Atherton, 17 in a four-game victory over Salinas and 11 Thursday in a sweep of Burlingame.

The Lancers improved to 8-4.

Pinewood opened play in the West Bay Athletic League Skyline Division with a straight-set loss at Mercy Burlingame Thursday. Mehra den Braven posted 22 kills for the Panthers, while setter Tehmi den Braven recorded 24 assists.

Pinewood, which earlier in the week swept Woodside Priory, went to 3-2 overall.

Girls golf

St. Francis remains atop the WCAL after winning both its matches last week.

The Lancers followed a 209-274 rout of Notre Dame-Belmont Sept. 16 with a 212-219 win over Presentation Sept. 18.

Bibi Liu posted the best score both days – tying teammate Valerie Wang for medalist honors against Notre Dame – at Shoreline Golf Links (par 36).
