Solar Home Tour scheduled Oct. 5

Acterra and SunWork Renewable Energy Products have scheduled the 2013 Solar Home Tour and Workshops, “The Road to Zero Net Energy,” a self-guided tour of eight local homes, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

Homes on the tour include a newly built Zero Net Energy house and several passive-design residences. Participants can speak to the homeowners about the various methods they use to reduce their energy bills. The event will also spotlight all-electric and plug-in vehicles.

Registration begins 10 a.m. at Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, followed by workshops that cover the definition of a “net-zero energy” home, how solar electric systems work, the financial and environmental benefits, and how to pursue a project for your own home. Participants are encouraged to bring their average monthly electricity cost to the workshop.

The tour, part of the American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour, is co-sponsored by the NorCal Solar Association, the Sierra Club’s Loma Prieta Chapter and Build It Green.

A donation of $10 per person or $15 for a family is requested.

For a schedule and more information, visit acterra.org.
