DOROTHY W. BROWN

OBIT DorothyBrown

1919 - 2013

Dorothy Brown (“Nana”) passed away on July 30, 2013, three weeks shy of her 94th birthday. She was born on August 19, 1919 at the Palo Alto hospital to Charles W. and Josephine D. Wright.

Her one sibling, Arthur Wright, preceded her in death. Dorothy was a loving mother to her daughter Dyan Hubb (Gary), grandmother to Lori (Jim) and David (Jamie), and great grandmother to David, Kelly, Molly and Stephen Rowse and Madelyn Hubb.

Dorothy was a lifetime resident of Palo Alto and Los Altos Hills. As a child, she grew up on the family’s apricot ranch in Los Altos Hills, riding her pony to and from the one room Purissima grammar school. She attended Palo High School where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Alan Brown.  They were married over 50 years when Alan passed away in July 1990.

Shortly after they were married, Alan enlisted in the Navy and Dorothy and Dyan moved to San Jose to live with relatives.  Dorothy immediately found work at the P.M. Mill to support her family and the war effort while Alan was away. Alan’s return to San Francisco on a dilapidated navy frigate was a story Dorothy loved to share with close friends and always brought tears to her eyes. After the war, Alan and Dorothy owned Brown’s gift stores in Palo Alto and Los Altos for 12 years and then Dorothy worked in the food service departments at both De Anza and Foothill Junior Colleges before retiring in 1980.

Throughout her life Dorothy’s passions included her family, her friends, and her animals. While living at her family ranch in Los Altos Hills, she surrounded herself with them all. She had a love of life that was infectious to all those around her, always up for an adventure, whether it be a late night ride on her horse, a weekend road trip to Tahoe or Fort Jones, or a 6 week journey around the US. And, though confined to a wheelchair in her later years, she always was ready to go wherever the road and her family and friends took her. Her unwavering love, kindness and enthusiasm are dearly missed.

Many thanks to the caring staff at Emeritus at Harden Ranch who cared so dearly for Dorothy in her final years.

Dorothy was interned next to her husband Alan at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto. A celebration and remembrance of her life will take place at a later time.
