Does Los Altos have a parking problem, or is it a symptom? : Other Voices

Yes, and yes. It appears that the downtown Los Altos parking problem is a symptom of the city’s “Sarah Winchester” approach to planning that instead of resulting in staircases to nowhere resulted in a hotel without parking required by code.(1)

Repeat feat for Lancers

Ellie Van Houtte/Town Crier
St. Francis High linebacker John Powers drills Palma quarterback Mitch Kidd in the second half of Friday’s game.

On a night St. Francis High reunited and honored its 1983 Central Coast Section championship football team, the 2013 Lancers made their own mark.

St. Francis (2-0), playing its home opener, posted its second straight shutout in a 26-0 win over Palma (0-2) Friday.

The Lancers have held five of their last six opponents scoreless, dating back to last year. The last two shutouts have come under new head coach Greg Calcagno.

“Cannot ask for anymore than that,” Calcagno said. “The defense has done a fine job. … The kids are fantastic and they’re believing in what we’re doing.”

Junior linebacker Steve Dinneen led the Lancer defense with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Dinneen was part of a unit that limited the visiting Chieftains to only 104 yards of offense, with only nine of those coming in the fourth quarter. Palma ran just seven offensive plays in the final quarter and finished the game 0-for-10 on third downs.

Offensively, the Lancers did most of their work on the ground, running for 248 of their 270 total yards. Senior running back Alex Andrighetto led the team with 136 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Senior Landon Baty added 72 yards rushing on eight touches.

“We knew a bunch of people were going to be here for the opener tonight,” Andrighetto said of the team’s home-opening win. “We wanted to put on a show and that’s what I told our guys we were going to do – put on a clinic.”

Calcagno said with several players like Andrighetto and Baty playing on offense and defense this season, teammates like Devin Hurtado – who added 39 yards rushing – will likely see increased playing time at running back.

“Whoever is able to go, we’ll get them the ball and they’ll make some plays,” the coach said. “They each have a couple of different things they do well, and it’s nice to be able to alternate them and have success.”

The win was Calcagno’s first at home since taking over a program once run by his father, Ron Calcagno. The elder Calcagno was among those honored Friday; he coached the 1983 title team.

“A lot of guys were coming from back East and all over,” Greg Calcagno said of the 1983 team reunion. “It was a special night for them and for us, and for what we’re trying to do with our traditions at St. Francis.”

Leading 6-0 after a pair of first-half field goals by Patrick Fordham, the Lancers padded their slim lead early in the third quarter with a six-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown run from Andrighetto with 7:19 remaining. St. Francis opted for the two-point conversion, which failed and left the lead at 12-0.

Andrighetto, who gained 57 of his game-high 136 yards on the drive, wasn’t done. He added his second rushing touchdown on a 1-yard run with eight minutes left in the fourth. The 66-yard drive pushed the lead to 19-0 after the PAT.

Ten seconds later, junior defensive back Riley Quinn picked off a pass from Palma quarterback Mitch Kidd. The Lancers were back in the end zone soon after, this time getting a 1-yard touchdown run from Hurtado. The PAT extended St. Francis’ lead to 26-0 with 4:35 remaining.

The Lancers are scheduled to host Skyline 7:30 p.m. Friday.
